Researchers Identify New Drug Target For Diabetes.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins compared diabetic and healthy rats and observed a fundamental imbalance in the enzyme levels within cell mitochondria with higher levels of O-GlcNAc transferase (which adds O-GlcNAc to proteins) and lower levels of O-GlcNAcase, which removes the molecule. The team concluded that creation of a drug that could balance these enzymes would lead to a new approach to preventing or treating diabetes. The study was reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

FDA Warns SGLT2 inhibitors May Cause Ketoacidosis.
FDA announced that the new class of diabetes medications SGLT2 inhibitors, including Farxiga (dapagliflozin), Invokana (canagliflozin), and Jardiance (embagliflozin), may cause ketoacidosis. The FDA received 20 adverse event reports detailing ketoacidosis from March 2013 to June 6, 2014, and has continued to receive reports since.

Thyroid-Cancer Survivors May have Increased Risk For Breast Cancer
Data from the SEER 1973–2011 presented at the annual meeting of endocrine surgeons suggests thyroid-cancer survivors are at increased risk for developing breast cancer compared with the general population. Earlier at the Endocrine Society meeting, same authors presented reverse findings from same database: breast cancer patients are at increased risk for thyroid cancer.
